Over consumption of starches and sugars (NSC) by equids, especially ponies, has been linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance, obesity and laminitis. Low NSC feeds are readily available as required but additional management strategies are needed to reduce the intake of NSC from forage especially pasture. This paper will review several studies we have undertaken recently (12,3,4) looking at practical ways of reducing NSC intake.
